Travel Warnings
Travel warnings are public notices by a government agency, that provide information about the safety of traveling to or from a destination. Travel warnings may be in effect for an entire area or even more than one destination, depending on the circumstances. The purpose in this is so that travelers can make informed decisions about their travel plans, including the destinations that have warnings in effect. These travel warnings will help travelers to prepare for the difficult conditions or to avoid the potential risk altogether. Examples Of A Travel Warning What Are Examples Of Travel Warnings? Travel warnings could be weather related, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, or they be warnings of civil unrest, or of widespread disease. Terrorist activity, including anniversary dates of terrorist events, usually cause a travel warning to be announced. Even local activity, such as student demonstrations or gang violence has prompted some travel warnings. |

Often times public announcements are made as opposed to travel warnings, which are milder than the actual warning itself. Travel warnings are severe and do sometimes come with explicit instructions to stay away from an element of danger. For example in 2006, the US state department issued travel warnings for Americans to avoid Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, among 31 other countries. Foreign travel warnings are available at the US state government website, which as of the beginning of 2007, lists several countries that are under travel warnings, including Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Negal, Guinea and the Philippines.
When dealing with travel warnings and consular information travel warnings, always pay special attention to the instructions that come along with the warnings. A travel warning doesn't necessarily mean it's unsafe to travel to or from a location, but there may be special safely rules you will be advised to follow. Travel Warnings And Cost There have been incidents where cost has been a factor in evacuating a country that had a travel warning issued. U.S. forces will usually be available for an emergency evacuation, as this is handled through the Office of American Citizens Services And Crisis Management. However, at times evacuees have also been slapped with a bill after the fact. This uncertainty does make the option of international insurance very appealing, as these companies specialize in covering the unexpected. |
